Naturally, due to the age differences between each generation, they are at different stages within their life cycle. This is important for you to consider as a leader as it has a strong influence on the motivators and values of your team members.
Through using Super’s Career Development Theory, this lesson provides you with an overview of the different life stages each generation are likely to be in. They move through the stages as they mature.
Exploration (aged 14-24)
This is the phase Generation Z are most likely to reflect. They are trying to find themselves in the world of work, understand what they do and don’t like and try to understand the direction they want their career to go in.
As LeaderX, you should make sure you are not putting pressure on Generation Z and allow them to get used to their environment. They also need time to work out what kind of employee/team member they want to be.
Establishment (aged 25-44)
This phase captures both GenX and Millennials because of how wide the age range is. Naturally they are going to have different needs and wants as they move through this stage.
At this phase, employees have starting understanding what they want from their career and are starting to look for promotional opportunities. As their leader, you should try and make sure development opportunities are available or you could struggle to engage or retain your team members.
This is also when work-life balance slowly becomes a priority as both generations start to settle down, consider starting families and appreciate spending time with loved ones. This is when, as a leader, you can help by being more flexible with working hours and working from home.
Maintenance (aged 45-65)
Baby Boomers are currently within this phase. They have achieved most of their career ambitions, they have older children and been settled for a while.
At work they are relaxed in their approach and are not seeking promotions as strongly as some of the younger generations. This doesn’t mean as their leader you can take on a one-size-fits all approach. Some Boomers may still want promotions so make sure you don’t limit their opportunities.
Note About Generation's Life Stage
Life stages can also be different for individuals so try not to generalise your approach too much to each generation. Some of Generation Z might already be settling down and wanting more of a work-life balance whilst some Boomers might be wanting to continue progressing their career and developing their skills.
