Getting to know Millennials

The Millennials (born 1980-2000), also known as Gen Y/snowflakes, have grown up during a time of rapid change. They were named Millennials as they became adults at the turn of the third millennium. They have different priorities and expectations than Baby Boomers and is the biggest generation to ever exist.

Millennials are the most digitally aware and globally connected generation who grew up with the evolution of technology into what we know it as today. The age they are choosing to leave home, live alone, buy their first home and consider marriage and children is significantly older than their parents when they were in these situations.

They were bought up in a time where individualism was encouraged, and everyone was told to follow their dreams, so the generation appears to be more confident than those before them. However, this has been seen to go to an extreme and Millennials have frequently been labelled as narcissisticentitled and lazy.

Their childhood consisted of their parents encouraging higher education meaning they have less work experience, are under-skilled and tend to hope jobs more frequently. This contrasts with Baby Boomers who were working from a young age and had little emotional connection with their parents.

On a daily basis, Millennials feel they have earnt a place at the table. They want everyone to win and feel most comfortable working in an involved and collaborative environment. Yet they have also experienced world-changing events such as 9/11 and an age of protests around race and gender.
