Generation Z (born after 2000) are now in their early 20’s and starting to enter the professional workplace. They were raised by Generation X and Millennials and are the most digitally advanced and aware generation so far. They have never known a world without the internet.
They are even more globally connected and aware, with the rise of social media making it easier for them to connect with people across the world. This has opened up more dialogue and increased knowledge of events going on across the world. Ultimately meaning Gen Z have a burning anger at injustice, environmental damage and imbalance as well as inequalities.
Much like their Millennials predecessor’s, Generation Z have education and attainment drilled into them which has seen them rebel from professional expectations and desire jobs such as being a Youtuber/influencer. This could be because they are seen to have been wrapped in cotton wool throughout their childhood.
The generation feel a lot of pressure and expectations from their parents and society. Yet realistically, the generation are still establishing who they are and what they mean for the workplace because they are still so young and new to working.
They are activists by nature, globally and socially aware and have been nurtured to have a voice and use it to stand up for what they believe. This vocal generation aren’t afraid to challenge, and this might create conflict if you are not ready to be challenged. Learning to embrace their passion will enhance working relationships and help evolve organisations.
