As mentioned within the right people, right role course (linked here), we all have our own beliefs, attitudes and style when it comes to delegation.

Activity

It is important for you to think about your role and understand yourself as a delegator. You need to ask yourself:

When do I delegate?

When don’t I delegate?

What makes it easy?

What makes it hard?

What is my style?

From the image below you can start to look at categorising your tasks to decide what needs to be done by you, what you can delegate and the tasks that really are not as important as you think. If you are someone who struggles with delegation then this is a useful tool to use.

Ultimately, delegation simply means work sharing. It means holding others accountable for the work they do. Just because you are being responsible does not mean you are being accountable so make sure you are reflecting in the moment where possible.

The key to delegation is to think and plan rather than just reacting, this is when things get lost in translation. By clarifying your accountability, responsibility and desired result you have something clear to work towards and are more likely to be successful.

However, you can’t just delegate to anyone, you need to make sure you are delegating to the right person with agreed time frames. You need to keep in contact with them to ensure they feel supported and communicate with them effectively throughout the process.

During and after, feedback can also be an effective tool. If you feel unsure about giving feedback, make sure you complete the fearless feedback course (linked here).
