In the five behaviours of a cohesive team programme, we do an activity based on “Why are you, as a team, here?.” I ask the team, what is your purpose. Why do you exist? It allows others to share their thoughts and understandings of the teams' purpose, and to get everyone aligned.
Team members gain clarity over their roles, expertise, working styles and the contribution and value they can add to the team. It’s the first stage of trust building. I love this stage as you can see masks being lowered and the armour coming off. People get comfortable being with each other and
At this point, people become less concerned about gaining approval and less guarded in their communication. They are prepared to take more risks and start to reveal their own agendas. This is when you will start to see everyone working as a team.
Individuals are drawn to certain aspects of the project, and members with similar interests form cliques that grow and merge as they influence those around them. Team identity is still weak, but structure starts to form, and people begin to feel that they belong.
How To Lead Through This Stage
- Ensure everyone feels comfortable with the vision and goals of the team and that they feel you are moving in the right direction.
- Do not blame the team if they are still feeling uncertain, it is a gradual process.
- If you do not discuss your objectives, conflict is likely to arise as the team will not always have the same opinions of tasks etc.
- Try and remain aware of your team.
- Make sure your team feeling comfortable having open conversations with each other and you.
Now try out the activity linked below with your team to clarify team principles and gain clarity on how you will work together now and in the future. (Expected time 30 – 60 mins)
