The formal process should never be about paperwork, that should just be a by-product. The formal process should encourage you to start having open conversations with your team.

Make sure you are communicating your goals and the business goals and make sure you team is aligned. One tool that can be helpful in making sure this happens is the team charter.

Don’t forget to informally check in, it doesn’t also have to be in meetings it could be a 5-minute conversation in the coffee queue on how they feel their goal achievement is going.

It is important for you to agree the best way to monitor progress and outputs because some techniques will motivate team members more than others.
