The role of the Manager is simple, yet many businesses still operate a management system which is outdated. Your job, as a leader, is to manage the performance of your team and ensure work is completed.
The Manager is not there to do the tasks themselves, sometimes they don’t even need to know how to do the task (although some understanding is useful). The role of the Manager is simple. Their job is to achieve team targets, tasks or objectives. How they do this depends on the work or task, the culture of the business and their management style.
The core functions which should make up most of the managers roles are:
- 1Planning: The manager takes the objectives of the business and the team and then plans work, tasks and activities around them to ensure they are delivered. Plans can be annual, monthly or even daily.
- 2Organising – Once the plan is clear, the manager must organise the resources, including people, to deliver the objectives.
- 3Delegating – The role of the manager is not to do the work, but to delegate to the right people. This is a skill in itself as it requires the manager to identify skills, attitudes and developmental areas. It is a two-way process.
- 4Monitoring – The manager monitors the progress of the objectives. Together with the team member, they agree what is needed to monitor, check-ins, reports, updates etc. When things go off track, they can work together quickly to find solutions.
- 5Developing – Whether it’s developing systems, processes or people, this is the role of the manager. Continual improvement and peak performance come when people are stretch; challenges and developed.
We know that managers will have meetings to attend, reports to create, recruitment and other personal development activities. This is life. Yet when they put those activities ahead of the 5 key roles of a manager, they lose control of the team and their performance. This is when positive performance management can help to maintain open conversations and transparency around team progress in their goals and achievements.
