Choose a goal, either a personal one or one you want to set for a member of your team:
- What’s the big picture and how will that impact the overall business goals?
- Why is the completion of this goal important and what is the outcome?
- How does this goal contribute to other goals or objectives?
- How does this goal mean for the individual, what actually needs to be done?
- It is stretching their capability.
- What does good/done look like to you – you need to be clear?
Now that you know the importance of goals, involving your team in goal setting and the structure of crafting great goals to ensure success, remember to consider these top tips and revisit them from time to time:
- Identify the goals, organise the assets, delegate the tasks, monitor progress and develop systems and people to ensure success.
- Goals are steppingstones to an end result; although you set the direction, the what, allowing your team to own the how is vital.
- The leader sets the what (vision and mission) but then empowers others (the team) to come up with the how (the goals).
- If you can’t provide total clarity on the goal, what good looks like and why it is important, then don’t expect your people to care.
- When your people get comfortable with the structure of goal setting in a coaching style, they will soon become prepared for the discussions.
- Remember that setting great goals involves finding the goals, refining the goals and always ensure you follow-up on those goals.
