Goal setting is a two-way process. Autonomous LeaderX hates telling people what to do and much prefers others to own their work and feel responsible for delivering. As leader, you facilitate the goal-setting conversations, adding clarity, coaching and championing others to stretch and challenge themselves. There is an art to setting great goals and doing it correctly at the start as this saves time later. Here is my recommended approach.
Find the goal
Communicate the vision, whether it’s at individual, team or whole business level so that people are excited about contributing to this future state. Link it to the project or task and communicate how it fits into the wider business context. You are selling the dream here so create motivation in others to own and deliver the goal.
Example
I might say, "We need to deliver a workshop at the end of the quarter for a new client. They are a key strategic client who are looking to select a long-term delivery partner which will align to our overall goal of working with 10 key partners this year.
I would like you to organise the logistics for the workshop, which includes locations, menu, delegate invitations, sending them welcome packs and joining instructions. You will need to work with the workshop creator to understand their schedule, and the client manager to ensure all delegates needs and requirements are met. Once we have agreed the budget and timings, I will let you know so you can manage your work.
I will need to approve the plan before you send it to the client, so keep me updated on progress. I will be responsible for coordinating all contributors, but you are responsible for delivering the logistical planning and delivery. In my mind, that looks like a clear plan with all elements clearly marked in a step by step approach by the end of the month. Then by the end of month two, you will have the bookings completed and be ready to send the welcome packs with instructions which I want you to create. Great looks like all delegates briefed, communicated and feeling completely prepared before they arrived, any questions answered, and so they are able to turn up and simply be present and excited about the workshop.
