Discover where you want to be

GAP ANALYSIS - ACTIVITY 1

A standard coaching tool is the personal wheel, sometimes called the Wheel of Life. It is a powerful tool that shows you the gaps between where you want to be and where you are now.

How it Works

This tool gives you the opportunity to vision a future state and gain clarity about what it looks like. This tool can be easily translated into a business wheel so you can identify what good and what great looks like in your organisation.

The power of the tool is the conversation around each of the 8 selected goals you will consider and the help it gives you to identify your biggest priorities.

This will challenge you (and your team if you do it a a group) to describe what exceptional (the dream) looks like to you, which is actually harder than you might think. It also helps to stretch assumptions you might have about what is possible and how others perceive success.

I recommend revisiting the tool to assess how much you have achieved. Use at the start and end of the programme to help you see just how far you've come.

Use it with your team to decide on the big goals for the year ahead or at a business strategy session.  Just follow these simple steps:

STEP 1: Draw a circle and divide it into 8 parts, like the spokes of a wheel, with each segment representing a part of your life. The worksheet above provides you with some examples of the labels you might like to give each of the 8 segments, but feel free to use your own.

STEP 2: The outer circle is your peak performance or success criteria, your 10/10. The centre of the circle, where the spokes cross, is zero. Explore what a 10/10 result would be for each segment and write it down. Be really clear. Now if that is your 10, what number would you award now?

STEP 3: Once you have marked out where you are in each segment, join up the lines to see how smooth, clunking or slow your journey is? Does this give insight?  Discuss how you can change it and where you need to focus. Compare everyone’s perspectives and actively listen to understand. Now you can prioritise closing the biggest gaps and creating a new vision or strategy.

Tool Tip

In a team environment, this opens up discussions about others’ perceptions of great, good and done, and what they believe the burning platforms are.
