Are You Engaging or Restraining Conflict?

When you find yourselves in a conflict you can react in two ways. You can engage, so participate in the conflict, or restrain when you hold back your opinions and thoughts.

Most people tend to gravitate more towards one approach and is seen as a preference but you can demonstrate both engaging and restraining in conflict depending on the situation. Your preferred response, however, is thought to be guided by your DiSC personality style.

The Dominant style is found to engage in conflict.

They are direct, opinionated and say what is on their minds. They expect others to also do this but don’t like when things get clouded from an overwhelming amount of emotion.

They prefer open people but don’t enjoy self-expression and a lot of emotion. They are found to be blunt and direct in expressing themselves which can be a key creator of conflict.

They tend to have a greater focus on winning rather than maintaining relationships with colleagues.

The Influential style is found to engage in conflict.

They find it natural to express their thoughts and opinions openly with team members. This tends to be more impulsively than the other styles, creating heated conflict.

The I style’s impulsive can mean regret is felt later on and this is something that is dwelled on for a period of time afterwards.

They encourage self-expression and don’t get discouraged easily. They try not to escalate situations and may interrupt others to attempt to diffuse situations, yet instead tend to make it worse.

The Steady style is found to restrain from conflict.

They want team members to agree and cooperate with them. They don’t want to hurt team members feelings so are careful about what they say.

They avoid being blunt so they can maintain positive relationships with other team members.

They are not overly expressive and tend to show a more introverted personality

The Conscientious style is found to restrain from conflict.

They feel the need to explain their perspectives and opinions in a clear and controlled way and tend to stick to facts.

They are objective in their approach and don’t respond well to high levels of emotion.

They sometimes come across as cold and inconsiderate because of their approach.
