Let's start this lesson with a reflection
Think of a recent communication scenario.
How did you know your message was heard and understood?
What was your intention/outcome?
What was the impact you made?
How did the other person feel or respond?
What went well?
How could you improve?
It all happens in the mind.
Communication is handled within the brain and the way we communicate and receive the communication is handled in different parts of the brain. Therefore, it happens FAST. By opening up different parts of the brain we can influence how effective our communication is. As a leader, you can change your communication to make a different impact on your audience.
For example, marketers work to the rule of 7. People need to hear or see something 7 times before they actually remember it. However, I believe that if you speak from the heart, you only need to say it once before someone really hears you. The more real, honest and authentic you are in your communication, the more people tune in and really hear your message.
There is a delicate balance when communicating your message. You need to keep it simple, so people will grasp the key concepts, yet apply enough context to add meaning and address real-world issues. You need to be specific and structured in your messaging, bringing in your own personality and style, and then repeat the same message consistently over multiple channels, at least 7 times. If your message is important enough, it’s worth spending the time crafting it and talking about it often; in fact, every opportunity you can.
Top tip
If what you are communicating needs to be heard and you need people to buy into it, then you need to make communication a priority, not a one hit wonder.
