There is no getting around the fact that the only measure of a great team is whether it accomplishes what it sets out to accomplish.
Great teams ensure that all members, in spite of their individual responsibilities and areas of expertise, are doing whatever they can to help the team accomplish its goals.
Consider the importance of focusing on collective results:
A Team That Is Not Focused on Results:
Stagnates/fails to grow
Rarely defeats competitors
Loses achievement-oriented employees
Encourages team members to focus on their own careers and individual goals
Is easily distracted
A Team That Focuses on Results:
Retains achievement-oriented employees
Minimizes individualistic behaviour
Enjoys success and suffers failure acutely
Benefits from individuals who subjugate their own goals/interest for the good of the team
Avoids distractions
Reflection
Does the team find achieving result difficult? If so, why?
Does the team feel achieving results is a group effort or the accomplishments of individuals?
What can you do to help team members feel more motivated?
Which does the team value more – individual success or collective success?
Do team members call out when individuals put their needs over the teams?
Are there any specific obstacles the team need to overcome?
