“Tell me and I will do it. Ask me and I will lean in. Involve me and I will be willing.”

In every programme I run, clients ask me to include a workshop grounded in motivation. They are tired of doing all of the pushing. They are frustrated by having to come up with all of the answers. They know there is an easier way yet they are struggling to create a highly motivated team. This leads to more impatience and directing.

This is the time for you to start leading.

Noone likes to be told what to do. Sometimes, when decisions need to be made quickly and there is a simple answer, telling is necessary. We now live in a world where problems are more volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA). Solutions are not either or. You need highly motivated people to be involved in the solutions, take ownership and deliver high performance if you are to succeed.

It should come as no surprise that how you are managed has a direct impact on your personal performance. Gallup reported that only 30% of US employees are engaged at work and globally that figure dropped to 13%. They discovered that 70% of team performance is directly linked to the skills of the Manager and only 1 in 10 managers have the skills to achieve team excellence. The 10% were able to engage team members, customers and retain top performance and create psychological safety so people perform.

So, it starts with you, the leader.
