Whether you work together everyday or can bring people together periodically, there is something special about coming together face to face.
It is a challenge when those social events mean leaving loved ones to stay away, travel large distances or stepping away from remote to large gatherings. Be mindful of that when organising an in person gathering, but if done well, it can really create strong relationships.
Create a social spot. Many organisations are redesigning their physical spaces to enable more collaborative or informal meeting spaces where people can come together. If you have a dining room or canteen, pods, soft seating, plants, softer lighting, all add to a more informal feel. Creating a “social spot” for your employees will give them an area where they can relax, socialise or get playful without disturbing others. Some companies have created gardens (inside and out) where colleagues to sit amongst plants and water. Others have created libraries, play rooms with table tennis or bean bags to get comfortable. The idea is to create spaces that don't feel like work spaces.
Celebrate. My team always celebrated special days. It may have been a birthday, an engagement, new house or even a festivity. There would generally be cake, maybe a buffet, a card or gift for sure. We did monthly awards for people who demonstrated the values or behaviours of the business. Hold annual ceremonies to recognise employees for their hard work, host employee appreciation days once a month or an annual family day. Meet in the local pub or restaurant once a month perhaps.
Team building. Team building can be a great way to bring colleagues together. Whether its a 10 minute activity in your monthly meeting, an organised social activity or an away day, you create moments together outside of the normal environment. Don't force people to do things they don't want to do - not everyone wants to zip-lining or go out dancing. Ask your team for ideas and suggestions so it feels inclusive. When implemented properly, effective team building activities are excellent for cultivating a sense of unity among employees. The goal is to unwind, have some fun and build connections. We have done scavenger hunts, pioneering, volunteer days, walks up the hills, sports days, crystal maze style days, Lego building, escape rooms and more with clients. The ideas are limitless.
Wellness challenges or groups. Set up a walking or running group, a book club or other activities where members self elect to join and meet other members of the organisation. A team walking challenge will challenge colleagues to come together and compete as a team to take more steps in one month than other departments. Daily walking clubs are another excellent idea that can also be used to encourage social connections. Wellgiving is a great app to help you start.
Share a meal. There is something very human about breaking bread together. t’s easy for everyone to bond over a plate of food. Employers can provide opportunities for social engagement by hosting team lunches, breakfast in the coffee shop or an evening meal.
