Delegation mastery

We all have our own beliefs, attitudes and style when it comes to delegation.  Some people feel really guilty. Some people just give everything away. Some people just dump everything downstream and then wash their hands of it. Understanding your relationship with delegation is critical in becoming a time master.

Think about your role and ask yourself...

  • When do you delegate?
  • When don't you?
  • What makes it easy?
  • What makes it hard?
  • What is your style?

As a manager, your job is to delegate work to others. You have a goal, make a plan, organise people, time and resources to deliver it, then delegate. If you aren't delegating, what exactly are your team doing? Of the tasks that you are doing, which of them are vital, as in only you can do them, and which ones are functional, as in which can be done by you or someone else. The latter need to be delegated as soon as possible.

Delegation simply means work sharing. It means distributing work through a series of tasks, responsibilities and processes, then holding others accountable for the work they do. You may still be responsible but not accountable.

Delegation makes business sense – you have people to perform tasks so use them, involve them, empower them.
Delegation frees you up to do the important stuff.
