Constructing your message

LeaderX is excelling in communication as this guarantees the success of the business. Since you are the person who inspires and motivates the team, you have to use powerful tools like communication to gain trust and remove all barriers that hinder progress. When the leader’s message is not effectively constructed or transmitted, it might lead to low morale, decreased performance and missed opportunities to align your people to your vision.

Have a look at the exercise provided below to learn how to structure your message effectively. This will help you to bring your own personality and approach, yet be structured and clear. You need to create warmth and connection whilst giving stability and security. This exercise is really useful when you have a really critical message that needs delivering. I would also recommend it to anyone who is a little more impromptu and off the cuff in their communication style.

DECONSTRUCTING YOUR MESSAGE

Step 1

Think of a message you need to communicate to your people. Perhaps it is one you have already communicated that missed the mark.

Step 2

Answer the following questions:

1. What do I/we want, and why is it important?

2. What do I need people to really understand and feel?

3. What are the essential facts or changes that led me to this decision?

4. How can I convey this message in normal, human language?

5. What will it mean to them?

6. What communication channels are available to me?

Top tip

Repeat your message.

We often fail to repeat the messaging because we don’t want to patronise people, get bored of the same messages and feel the need to get into action. Yet as humans, we all need to interpret a message through our eyes, ears and hearts to really make it stick.
