Personal development plan

Creating a personal development plan should always be more than just meeting a paperwork requirement. It should be about achieving the best outcome from the individuals within your team. Therefore, this lesson will help you understand the importance of a personal development plan and the tips on creating one that works for your team.

Managing your professional development: Whether you are new in post or a seasoned professional, the environment you are working in is constantly changing. Therefore, there is always a need to learn, grow and develop, or stagnate.

Apply a growth mindset: Your brains are plastic – as in they are not fixed but malleable. This is known as neuroplasticity.

You can choose to have a fixed mindset or a growth mindset.
Fixed mindsets assume they are born with a specific set of skills that they can’t change.
Growth mindsets believe that intelligence and talent are just the starting point.
In fact, there is no genetic coding for intelligence. It is based on the environment.

Growth mindsets respond to setbacks and challenges with hope and confidence. They know that failure does not reflect on the person they are, but instead they just didn’t succeed that time.

Self-audit and reflection

Others can give you feedback, and help you see blind spots, but it is always good to start with self-reflection. Reflect on any personality profiles, 360 feedback or any other kind of insights you have.

This means being honest with yourself.

If you can’t be honest with yourself, who else is ever going to believe you?

Reflection

When thinking about your current skills, ask yourself...

Are they adequate for the current role?
Do they align to the team or business priorities?
What are key responsibilities, and have you got the skills to meet them?
Where are you thriving, where could you do better?

When thinking about your past skills, look back and see what skills you have used in the past that could help you now.
Are those skills a bit rusty and could do with a refresh?
What skills or knowledge gaps do you need to bridge?
Do you have the practical skills and need to focus on the internal skills?
Look at other peers, what are their skills and how do you measure up against them?
