Sometimes the task feels so big that you become overwhelmed and do nothing. That's why it's so important to break the task down into smaller elements, understand the timeline of activities, dependencies, and stakeholders, and also who you might a little help or support from.

Say if you decided to run a marathon. If you turned up on the day of the race without any preparation, you are likely going to fail, so why bother starting? That's madness. Instead, you would get a training schedule, get the right kit, work on your mindset, diet, and fitness, and day by day it is totally possible. On those windy, wet and dark days when you don't want to train, by all means turn it into a sprint with a reward at the end of it, but knowing that overall it is a marathon and not a sprint.

Procrastinating over big projects and tasks is exactly the same. You need to break it down into smaller milestones, and probably you are going to need a little help from your team along the way.

Now some of the activities aren't going to be inspiring or might feel like hard work. Do them first - eat that frog. Honestly, if you can clear your day, and your mind early, then you have the rest of the day or week to focus on the enjoyable stuff. It takes discipline, but if you don't you will fall back into procrastination behaviours.

Just one step at a time, and before you know it, you are well on your way to success.

Checklist

If you find yourself procrastinating over a big task or project...

  • Have you got clarity over the big purpose - WHY are you doing it? What is the benefit to the organisation and to you?
  • Have you got clarity over time, budget, resources, and key decision points?
  • What are the key steps and milestones that need to be done, by whom and by when?
  • Add them to a project plan, calander, to do list or whatever system works for you. Make it visible and make it manageable.
