An Overview of MyBusiness

This step of the 5 MYs methodology is about leading the business to deliver your vision strategically. Completing the courses will help you to bring every member of your business along on your journey (beyond just your team), so they become accountable and committed to delivering your vision.

You will integrate your values, behaviours and the best ways of working through powerful and meaningful goals. Everyone will understand how you do business and why, and what needs to be done by who. This alignment enables everyone to feel safe, secure and stable and to really focus on delivery. When the conflicts, politics, second-guessing and blame are removed, people can simply focus on doing their best work.

Let’s just take a moment to reflect on where you are on your journey to becoming LeaderXIf you have taken the course in a linear approach, you have progressed from:

MyPresent, to  MySelf and on to, MyTeam and now you arrive at MyBusiness.

You and your team will be clear and aligned around who you are, what you stand for and what you want to achieve. You will know who you are as a leader and how you can best show up for your people. You, and your team will sense real camaraderie and feel safe with each other. You have a renewed sense of energy and passion to deliver. Now you turn your focus towards everyone in your business, your functions, teams and individuals, so that you can deliver the vision and purpose with common values and culture.

In MyBusiness you will finalise your strategy, communicate your vision, mission and purpose to a wider audience, firming up your objectives and empowering others to engage and own their part in the bigger picture. You actively involve others in the goal-setting and define your performance management approach, whether in person or remotely. The work you have done so far is building momentum and now, as you impact more people, the rate of change and action will intensify. It’s getting really exciting

Now is the journey to creating followership by being an authenticpurpose driven leader with a strong team alongside you. Together you can create the structure to execute your plans.

The process is simple on paper but it’s actually really hard in practice.

You must lead from the front, and trust your managers to deliver, do and say the right things, lead their own teams, and be your ambassadors. You need to stay in your lane and resist the temptation to troubleshoot or over-manage, instead of allowing your managers to manage.

Within this course and during my career I have worked with teams. You have been introduced to various tools and approaches that help you as a leader to translate your vision into a strategy, then into goals and objectives, and finally, into accountability around those goals. By this point you should have done a SWOT analysis as a whole team as it enables you to identify the priorities, dependencies and resources required. You will now learn how to create meaningful goals and how to have the right conversations and monitor performance.

It requires a different mindset, one which is underpinned by these core principles:

01

People come to work to do a good job

02

People can be trusted to do the right thing

03

People want to be part of something bigger than themselves where they feel they are contributing

04

People are responsible and accountable for their own performance

05

The manager’s job is to create an environment for people to do their best work and best thinking

06

People are treated as valuable partners in creating business success – rather than a disposable resource
